ILSI-India’s Key Achievements 1996-2004

  • ILSI-India has been looking at the safety of food ingredients and has organized conferences on food safety. Its Conference on Food Safety and Food Colors provided the scientific updates and paved the way for use of artificial colors in food. (1996).
  • ILSI-India was the first institution in the country to organize an educational   Conference on SPS and TBT   Agreements and Codex and highlighted its significances to industry and government representatives and researchers.  (1997).
  • ILSI-India has been in the forefront in modernizing food control systems and harmonization of food regulations and quality control systems in SAARC countries with Codex as reference point. (ongoing project since 1998).
  • ILSI-India was also the first institution in the country to organize an International Seminar on Genetically Modified Plants / Foods which expedited clearance of projects (ongoing project since 1999). The Seminar on Safety and Benefits of GM Crops provided latest updates to scientists with medical and nutrition background. (2003). The training programs organized by ILSI-India on Detection Methods for GM Plants/Foods have led to capacity building in the country in this area (2003).
  • India and other countries in the South Asian region suffer from the problem of micronutrient malnutrition. Fortification of foods with micronutrients is considered as one of the best strategies to eliminate micronutrient malnutrition in developing countries.  Fourteen international/national/ regional conferences organized by ILSI-India have created a great deal of awareness on technologies / costs / benefits of micronutrient fortification of foods and promoted production and   research on  fortified foods (ongoing project since 1999).
  • ILSI-India Seminar on Diabetes and Nutrition provided guidelines to industry on processed foods to be prepared keeping in view the changes in lifestyle and emergence of chronic diseases (2000). It also became basis for Guidelines to be prepared by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for   management and prevention of Diabetes.
  • The first International Seminar on Nutritional Labeling and Health Claims organized by ILSI-India in 2001 provided information on importance of nutrition labeling and health claims and  regulations in US, Europe, Japan and South East Asia to facilitate regulation in India (2001).
  • ILSI-India is the first institution in the country to   organize an International Conference of all concerned national and international institutions on Water Quality Management and adopted a Vision 2025 document providing guidelines for future work in the area of drinking water (ongoing project since 2002).
  • ILSI-India Symposium on Risk Assessment of Pesticide Residues in Water and Food organized on October 28-29, 2003 against the background of increasing concern in the country about pesticide residues in water and water based products and foods has led to objective assessment of the situation and provided valuable inputs to the researchers and policy makers.
  • The South Asian region has one third of world’s malnourished children. ILSI-India Seminar on Early Child Nutrition and future programs to be held on the subject will provide guidance on steps to be taken for improving health status of children (2003 onward).
  • Zinc has recently been identified as an important nutrient with diverse range of biological functions in humans. ILSI-India is the first institution in the country to organize a National Seminar on Importance of Zinc in Human Health (October 25-26).
