9/2/2005–9/3/2005, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, India
One of the most striking characteristics of the world population in the 21st century is the considerable increase in the number of older people. The World Health Organization (WHO) refers to this phenomenon as "Population Aging." Elderly individuals aged 60 years and more number about 81 million in India and are predicted to go up to 200 million by 2030. Population aging has evolved gradually in the developed countries as a result of the decline in birth rate and improved living standards. In India, population is aging swiftly because of the increasing life expectancy due to medical advances.
Aging is associated with physiological and functional decline of the body systems due to the biological process of aging. It varies from person to person and quite often biological age does not correspond with chronological age. Naturally attention is now being given to the issue of healthy aging. Most studies have revealed that nutrition, diet, physical activity, and self-care play a vital role in aging process.
Against this background, the Conference will focus on physiological and biochemical changes associated with aging 40 years onward as also on nutrition requirements, role of nutrition and dietary management for healthy aging, self-care and lifestyle for healthy aging. The object is to develop a "blueprint" for healthy aging.
