Background and Objectives
Zinc is an essential nutrient with a diverse range of biological functions in humans. For example, zinc has a critical role in physical growth, and gastrointestinal and immune functions. Adequate amounts of dietary zinc are thus required for normal development and function.
Zinc Deficiency results in stunted growth of children, increased rates and severity of infections such as diarrhea and pneumonia, abnormal outcomes in pregnancy, changes in neuro-behavioural development etc. Keeping in view the importance of Zinc in human health ILSI-India and ILSI HNI decided to organize a National Seminar on Importance of Zinc in Human Health. The Seminar is cosponsored by National Institute on Nutrition, Hyderabad and Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi. The Seminar was held October 25–26, 2004 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi. It had the following objectives:
- Assess importance of Zinc in growth, development and health of children and for pregnant and lactating mothers.
- Collate information on work done within the country on Zinc.
- Understand the causes for Zinc deficiency if any e.g. diet, environment.
- Study the health implications of Zinc deficiency.
- Assess the economic loss from Zinc deficiency.
- Identify areas of research.
- Develop strategies for overcoming zinc deficiency in population at risk.
