Background
An International Conference on Diabetes and Nutrition: A South Asian Perspective was developed by an advisory committee with representatives from the government, ILSI International, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and ILSI India. The conference was organized against the background that Type 2 Diabetes has emerged as a major health problem in South Asian countries in general, and India has the highest population of diabetics in the world.
The conference was cosponsored by the Department of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, Ministry of Health, Government of India, Center for Health Promotion (CHP), Human Nutrition Institute (HNI) and The Wellcome Trust, London, and was organized in association with the Diabetes Foundation of India, the International Diabetes Federation, National Institute of Nutrition, and Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India.
Focus
The conference focused on Type 2 Diabetes and discussed: the epidemiology of diabetes, the determinants of diabetes, nutritional strategies for management and prevention of diabetes, new horizons in diabetes management and health care costs, and socioeconomic implications. There was also a panel discussion on processed foods for diabetics.
Outcome
The conference participants adopted an action plan that outlines the strategies to control diabetes and actions to be taken by various stakeholders.
